RELEASE: How to Let Go and Create Space for Growth
As we start a new year or embark on a new endeavor, we naturally focus on what we want to achieve. But sometimes, the most transformative step isn’t adding more—it’s letting go. Releasing what no longer serves us creates space for new opportunities, deeper connections, and personal growth.
Whether it’s an outdated mindset, a toxic relationship, or an overfilled calendar, holding onto what doesn’t align with your values can weigh you down. Letting go isn’t easy, but it’s essential for progress.
Why Releasing Is Key to Growth
Releasing, or letting go, makes room for what truly matters. Research published in Science Advances suggests that learning to let go of upsetting thoughts can promote mental health during adversity. Importantly, this capacity to release emotional burdens may even be trainable.
We risk overwhelming our mental and emotional capacity when we hold onto stress, resentment, or outdated commitments. However, letting burdens go creates space for clarity, focus, and personal growth. Moreover, releasing is more than an act of self-care; it’s a powerful skill that builds resilience and equips us to navigate challenges with clarity and strength.
How to Identify What to Release
Identifying what’s holding you back isn’t always easy, but these three steps may help:
1️⃣ Reflect on What’s Weighing You Down
Ask yourself: What’s creating stress or frustration in my life? It could be a mindset, a habit, or even a physical item cluttering your space.
2️⃣ Assess Its Value
Consider whether this aspect adds value to your life or aligns with your current goals; if it doesn’t, let it go.
3️⃣Take Action to Release It
Start small. Have an honest conversation, set a boundary, or remove one item from your to-do list. Even a single step can create momentum.
A Client’s Story of Letting Go
Last year, I worked with a client, Mark, a driven entrepreneur who built a thriving business over a decade. Mark came to me feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and unsure how to move forward. As we talked, it became clear that a key source of his stress was a side project he’d poured time and resources into for years.
The project started as a passion—something he believed would expand his business and fulfill a personal dream. But over time, it had drained his energy and finances. He confided that the project no longer aligned with his core business goals but couldn’t let it go. “I’ve invested so much into this,” he told me. “Walking away feels like failure.”
Together, we explored what truly mattered to him: his business vision, values, and legacy he wanted to leave. With that clarity, Mark realized that holding onto the project wasn’t serving his long-term vision. It was hard to let go—there were sleepless nights and tough conversations—but a weight lifted when he finally released the project.
The decision freed up time and energy for Mark to refocus on his core business, leading to a breakthrough just months later. Letting go wasn’t a failure but a pivotal moment of alignment and growth.
Make Room for Growth
Releasing is a gift you give yourself. You create the mental, emotional, and physical space needed to welcome new possibilities by letting go of what’s holding you back.
