REDEFINE: Why External Success Measures Are No Longer Enough

The start of a new year is like a blank canvas—filled with possibilities and opportunities to grow, evolve, and thrive. This January, I’m embracing the power of RE: the ability to have a do-over, begin again, or change directions. It’s a chance to Reset, Rethink, Redefine, and Release what no longer serves us.

As we step into 2025, I want to challenge how we define success. For too long, success has been measured by external markers: job titles, material wealth, or how busy we are. But is that truly what success looks like?

Why Redefining Success Matters

Our definitions of success shape our goals, priorities, and ultimately, our happiness. Yet, according to a 2022 survey by McKinsey & Company, 61% of workers said they’re rethinking what they want from their careers, prioritizing flexibility and purpose over traditional metrics like salary.

This shift isn’t just about work—it reflects a broader desire for fulfillment and alignment in every area of life. By redefining success, we can focus on what truly matters, from building meaningful relationships to nurturing our well-being.

If we strip away societal expectations, success becomes intensely personal. For me, it’s about living a life aligned with my values—having the time and energy to pour into my family, faith, and passions.

10 Ways to Redefine Success on Your Terms

Furthermore, regardless of your career level, financial status, or social standing, you’re already successful on many fronts. Here are ten overlooked markers of success you might want to consider:

1. Feeling aligned with your purpose. When what you do reflects who you are, you experience a sense of meaning that transcends achievement.

2. Having the freedom to be authentic. There’s no more tremendous success than being fully and unapologetically yourself.

3. Building strong, meaningful relationships. The people we surround ourselves with are a cornerstone of a fulfilled life. Success is creating bonds that uplift and enrich your experiences.

4. Creating a positive impact on others. The ripple effect of kindness and contribution defines a legacy worth leaving behind.

5. Maintaining physical and mental well-being. Without health, nothing else matters. Success includes caring for the mind and body that carry you through life.

6. The ability to set boundaries. True success means saying no when necessary and protecting your time and energy for what truly matters.

7. Feeling at peace with your decisions. It’s not about figuring out everything but finding confidence in your choices.

8. Pursuing personal growth and learning. Success is a lifelong journey. Every new skill or lesson adds to the richness of your life.

9. Fostering creativity and joy. Finding moments of laughter, inspiration, and play is success in its purest form.

10. Achieving financial security—not excess. Having enough to live comfortably and pursue your dreams is often more than enough.

Reflect on these markers of success—how many resonate with your journey? What others might you add to make the list uniquely yours?

Steps to Redefine Success

If you are ready to rethink what success means to you, start with these steps:

  • Reflect on your values. What matters most to you? Please write it down and prioritize those things in your life.
  • Assess your current goals. Are they aligned with what you desire or based on the expectations of others?
  • Focus on progress, not perfection. Success isn’t about doing everything right—it’s about moving forward meaningfully.
  • Celebrate the small wins. Recognize and appreciate the less apparent successes, like saying no to something that doesn’t align with your goals.
Begin Again

As we navigate this new year, redefining success can help us move closer to a life of alignment, fulfillment, and purpose. This January, embrace the power of RE and take the first steps toward a truly meaningful 2025.
