Get Set Up for Success

Last week, we discussed several ways to get back on track to your goals if you’ve fallen off the proverbial wagon. I’ve been reflecting since then on the importance of people and place and how those two things are essential ingredients to the recipe for success.

When you optimize your physical surroundings and the people you surround yourself with, you intentionally create a space where you can thrive. The best part? You can make it as unique as you are!

Your Physical Environment

The space in which you work can significantly impact your motivation, well-being, productivity, and creativity. Make it a space that is both comfortable and inspiring.  Here is how.

1. Tidy Up: A clutter-free environment makes it easier to maintain focus and reduces stress. So block off time on your calendar for a re-org and clear out anything old or unnecessary; then make sure everything else has a home. Storage solutions that help keep things in their place are a worthwhile investment. A clear desk equals a clear mind, so make decluttering part of your routine.

2. Revisit the Decor: This is the fun part! Revisit the aesthetic elements of your workspace. Does it need a fresh coat of paint or an accent wall in a color that makes you smile? Blues and greens are linked to calm and creativity, while yellow has energetic and happy qualities. But if lavender or pink are your faves, go for it! Don’t forget artwork, photos, and quotes that inspire you.

3. Make it Comfy: Beyond visual comfort, you also want to ensure your physical comfort. An ergonomic chair is essential, as is a desk that sits at the right height (or even a standing desk) and good lighting. Also, consider keeping a yoga mat nearby for mid-day stretches, a water pitcher to keep yourself hydrated, and walking shoes for an impromptu stroll outside. We work better when we feel better.

The Company You Keep

When you keep people who support, advise, and inspire you, success is almost inevitable. Evaluate the relationships you have and whether or not they serve your best interests.

These are the people you want in your corner:

1. Cheerleaders: It’s easier to believe in yourself when others believe in you. Try to spend your time with family members, friends, and colleagues who are encouraging and supportive. Those good vibes will help bolster your confidence and carry you through the tough times.

2. Role Models: You don’t need to idolize anyone, but you will undoubtedly find people who inspire you. Find a mentor or a role model, someone who has achieved the kinds of things that you hope to accomplish for yourself. Their insights and experiences may prove invaluable. Seek them out and see if you can build a meaningful relationship.

3. Colleagues: Your community and industry are full of wonderful people doing extraordinary things. Engaging with these groups can spark new ideas, forge partnerships, and open up surprising opportunities. Check out your local chamber of commerce, trade associations, conferences, and workshops. Connecting is the key to building a reliable network.

Remember the Power of the Positive! Limit the time you spend with negative people who drain your enthusiasm. And be intentional about associating with positive people with a growth mindset and similar values. You’ll find that their light brightens yours, and vice versa. So you both receive a helpful burst of motivation.

Summary

Tailoring your place and your people to suit your needs can be a thoughtful exercise in curation. Carefully decide who you spend your hours with because every minute is precious. And take a deep breath as you survey your workspace. Does it give peace or anxiety? If it’s the latter, now you know what to do!

Lay the groundwork for achieving your goals by attending to your surroundings. Be your best self by immersing yourself in an awe-inspiring place with amazing people.
