Don’t Give Up:
Mid-Year Pep Talk

The halfway point in the year is a prime opportunity to reflect on your growth and renew your motivation. I salute you if you feel great and you’re checking boxes left and right! And if you feel discouraged, I salute you, too.

Remember: you still have six months to chip away at your goals and meet milestones.

Consider this your mid-year pep talk, my reminder that regardless of where you are today, there’s still time to recharge your battery and zoom forward with energy and enthusiasm.

Did You Break Through?

It’s important to stress that this look back isn’t meant to make anyone feel bad about themselves. I’d prefer you recognize all you have accomplished, even if it isn’t what you set out to do. Things happen, life challenges us in unexpected ways, and sometimes just putting one foot in front of the other is a victory.

But after looking back, it’s time to look ahead. At the beginning of the year, I shared (and many of you downloaded) Ascentim’s pivotal Breakthrough You Checklist. I designed this guide to give my clients a roadmap to 52 weeks of small actions that create big change. If you haven’t been playing along, there’s still time to catch up! You can download it today and get started instantly.

Beyond that, let’s review what we’ve discussed this month: adjusting your goals to your current circumstances, strategies for staying positive, and tips for persistence.

Adept at Adapting

Life really does have a fun way of surprising us. From families and relationships to jobs and side hustles, nothing stays the same for long – which means flexibility is a strength. Modifying your expectations and goals will help you keep moving ahead even in the face of obstacles.

Need to hit the reset button? No problem. Try these:

  • Reevaluate Your Goals: Are your objectives as meaningful and relevant as they were six months ago? If not, what can you modify to bring them in line with your current wants and needs?
  • Break It Down: When goals feel too big and overwhelming, try divvying them up into smaller, more manageable tasks. That makes it easier to tackle one piece of the puzzle at a time, giving you the motivation to keep going.
  • Set New Timelines: So what if you’re behind your original schedule? You’re in charge, so you get to make the rules. Rewrite the calendar and set new goal dates that seem realistic right now – then adjust as needed.
Accentuate the Positive

A positive mindset can change the game, especially when times are tough. It’s not about overlooking or ignoring challenges; it’s facing them head-on while believing you can overcome them. Resilience and a can-do spirit are miracle workers,

Try these three tips if your morale needs boosting:

  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every success deserves recognition, and every step forward is a victory. Pat yourself on the back, treat yourself to a mocha latte, or share your good news with a supportive friend.
  • Find Positive People: Choose to spend time with people who encourage and believe in you. Nay-sayers need not apply when you want to protect your head space.
  • Practice Self-Care: Your physical and mental well-being are foundational to a happy, healthy, successful life. So be sure to build exercise, meditation, and other activities that rejuvenate you into your routine.
Keep on Moving

Do we give up? Do we quit? No way!

Even if there are obstacles in our path or our progress is slower than we’d like, we can always push forward. Here are three tips for when you feel stuck:

  1. Eyes on the Prize: Keep your focus forward and remind yourself every day of why you set your goals in the first place. Write your goal on a sticky note and put it where you’ll see it each morning.
  2. Ask For Help: None of us can do it all on our own. Seek support from your peers, your mentor, or a career coach. Insights and encouragement can come from various people in your life, so be open and honest about your challenges. You might be surprised by the insights you gain.
  3. Fail Forward: Shift your mindset and start to see setbacks as learning opportunities. Every time we fail, we learn – we use those learnings to propel ourselves forward. After all, hindsight is 20/20!

I am rooting for you! Wherever you are relative to where you hoped to be, there is a path forward. It might look a little different than you initially imagined, but you have six more months – keep going, stay focused, and believe in your ability to succeed.

Whatever happens, do not give up. Your next breakthrough might be just around the corner.
